They also say they have been denied their wages for months on end and have been forced to live in squalid conditions in labor camps. Many of the workers say they were lured to Qatar with the promise of well-paid jobs, but have instead found themselves trapped in a cycle of debt and exploitation. The Guardian’s findings echo those of other recent reports which have highlighted the plight of migrant workers in Qatar. In September, Amnesty International released a report which detailed the “routine exploitation” of migrant workers in Qatar and called on the authorities to reform the country’s labor laws. The reports have shone a spotlight on the often-precarious position of migrant workers in Qatar, who make up around 90% of the country’s population. The Qatari authorities have pledged to improve conditions for migrant workers, and have said that they are investigating the claims of abuse.
